Parenthood comes with joys and sorrows, great days and others full of struggle.

For many parents facing the additional challenge of raising a child with special needs, parenthood is filled with not just questions about which school to attend or day care program to enjoy, but what programs will accept their child. Instead of frantically chasing a baby who’s crawling, a child beginning to crawl at age 7 can become a milestone worth celebrating.

It’s complicated. It’s messy. It’s incredibly hard. But it’s their journey, and they’re happy to share the tips that keep them going, even in the darkest times.

OtterBox Hopes Charity Project Has Growing Impact

To celebrate the launch of its charitable foundation, OtterBox presented each of its 240 employees a $200 grant certificate to donate to the charity of their choice. Employees were given three weeks to increase their donations before hand-delivering them to the chosen charities.

“The idea of this project was to get the employees involved in the foundation and to make it a point of pride,” said Tricia Lemmer, development director of Otter Cares. “Employees making donations in lots of small places will create a ripple across all of Northern Colorado.”

Mayor’s Awards Celebrate Those Who Help People With Disabilities

Kelsey Paul hasn’t let her disability slow her down and she doesn’t want others to be held back by theirs.

As an undergraduate at CSU, Paul organized the TGIF program at the university that offers social opportunities for teenagers with disabilities and teams them up with volunteers. She also worked with the program SLiCE, or Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement, and Respite Care.

Now a Colorado State University graduate and a Denver resident, she’s working on a master’s degree in nonprofit management and hopes to someday establish an agency similar to Respite Care.

Rocky’s Matz Making Impact Off Field

Bryan Matz could not have known what he was getting into four years ago when he stopped by the Fort Collins Respite Care Inc., to see if the organization would allow him to do his five hours of service learning required for a biology class.

“I definitely just went in there thinking this was just a project I wanted to get done for school,” Matz said. “But after I spent my first day there, I just kind of saw what kind of an impact I could have.”

Lopez Elementary Students Help Raise Money Awareness.

When Joe Harris’ wife Judy died nearly four years ago, he knew he wanted to honor her memory and keep giving to Respite Care Inc., the local organization “near and dear” to Judy’s heart, he said.

“My wife was very committed to Respite Care,” Harris said. “I thought it was a natural place to set up her memorial fund.”

At the same time, teachers at Lopez Elementary, where Judy had been teaching for 13 years, decided to start a tradition that encouraged their students to give back to the community.

Student Gives Help a Homey Feel

A Poudre High School IB student turned his high school project into a community affair with a Seussical twist after watching a family friend collapse at the ice rink.

Rohan Goel, 16, a sophomore at Poudre, was at a competitive ice-skating event when he watched a mother collapse and be rushed away for medical attention. Right away, neighbors took her two young children into their care while their mother recovered but did not have the know-how to take care of the third child with special needs.

Respite Care a Home Away From Home For Many

Heidi and Nick Munholland knew they were making the right decision to adopt their daughter Gertie when they found out there was respite care available near their home.

Gertie, now 7 months old, has Down syndrome, a chromosomal disorder that affects her development. The couple knew they wanted to adopt a baby with the condition but also realized she would need special care. That’s why respite care was so important.
